Jupiter's Overview

As the popularity of motorcycle touring increases so does the need for convenient means of enjoying this great recreational activity. With the baby-boomer generation retiring and gas prices at their highest point in history many domestic tourist will be taking up recreational motorcycle riding as an alternative to other more expensive vacations options.

Jupiter’s will provide local motorcycle enthusiasts and tourists with an affordable alternative to owning or shipping their own motorcycle for a more simple and carefree way to enjoy motorcycling in and around New York City. Offering motorcycle rental of the latest BMW Adventure Motorcycles for distance touring as well as stylish Harley-Davison Cruisers, customers will have an option in how they experience their ride. Jupiter’s addresses the gap in the service market for motorcycle rentals as there are currently no providers in NYC. In addition to rental services, Jupiter’s will provide motorcycle storage for owners seeking a safe place to house their motorcycles during the winter season and throughout the year.

Renting a motorcycle rather than using one’s own motorcycle is a more cost effective and convenient way of enjoying recreational motorcycling. For example: to ship one’s motorcycle from Europe to the US can cost anywhere from $400 to $1,500 dollars each way. It may take as long as a month for your motorcycle to meet you at your destination. This does not include the cost of insuring one’s motorcycle while traveling abroad, which can range from $70 to $150 dollars a month depending on the length of stay and value of the motorcycle. The cost and hassle for transporting a motorcycle for a week or two tour is hard to justify. This scenario is similar for someone hoping to travel within the continental US. A tourist visiting NYC from LA would have to spend a week traveling across the country in order to explore New York CIty by motorcycle or incur similar expense for shipping one’s motorcycle across the country. Renting a motorcycle is an affordable alternative both in cost and time for those looking to do short to medium length trips.

New York City is one of the only Great Global Cities that does not yet offer motorcycle rental. Rental Agencies are thriving in markets like: Los Angeles, San Francisco as well as in seasonal markets like Boston and Chicago. Although many of these cities with a large market presence have less of a seasonal climate, Jupiter’s Motorcycles overcomes this in two ways. First, there is a need among local residents for rental services as a cheap and easy altrnative to owning a motorcycle in NYC. Due to seasonal use of motorcycles in New York, Jupiter’s Motorcycles will offer winter storage to local riders during the coldest months. Second, beginning in year 2 of operations Jupiter’s will offer a one-way across country trip from New York to LA at the beginning and end of winter–a great opportunity for a cross country trip.

Why I'm starting a Motorcycle Rental in NYC.

In the summer of 2006 I spent over a month traveling alone across China by motorcycle. My only companion was a book by Ted Simon called “Jupiter’s Travels.” Mr. Ted Simon traveled around the world alone by motorcycle long before the adventure bikers of today set out to do the same. He wrote of his adventures and how he acquired his name. He was told by a friend “You have a determined soul. This is reflected in your mind. You are Jupiter…” he said.

To which Mr. Simon thought “Why not? I like the sound of that.”

The mission of my trip was very much the same as Jupiter’s as he said: “The goal was comprehension, and the only way to comprehend the world was by making myself vulnerable to it so that I could change me. The challenge was to lay myself open to everybody and everything that came my way. The prize was to change and grow big enough to feel one with the whole world.”

In China I travelled without being able to speak or read the language and used only a map and compass to navigate. Each day my priorities were to find food, a place to stay and make it as far as I could along the 3500 miles between Beijing, Xian and Shanghi I needed to get home. I spent one night out under the stars on the ground next to some old abandoned portion of the great wall–vulnerable in way that I had never known nor can I describe; in search of that oneness with the world Jupiter talked about.

“It surprised me to discover that this sense of rightness does not appear naturally in people, even though they live in the heart of nature,” Jupiter wrote. To which I agree. It was not my environs that needed to change but me. How do we change? I have come to believe that change happens through action.

This business is not just a business; its my attempt to help bring about the change in ourselves we all seek. That feeling of one with the world through action. Traveling helps me do that. Traveling by motorcycle brings me closer to the heart of nature both within myself and I find with others.

So, the way I see it, in a way were are all Jupiter. Or as another great traveler once wrote: "On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."
